CalTrack is an offline-first calorie and macronutrient tracker for Android. Your diary (the foods, dishes, and meals you log) is stored only on your device. CalTrack has no account, no server, and no analytics, and it never uploads your diary anywhere.
Two things, and only two things, ever leave your device, and both are optional and under your control:
- Food searches and scanned barcodes are sent to Open Food Facts to look up product nutrition, and only when you search or scan.
- Nutrition data written to Health Connect, described below, and only while you have turned Health Connect Sync on.
Health Connect
CalTrack can optionally mirror your diary into Android's Health Connect so your other health and fitness apps can see what you have eaten. This feature (Health Connect Sync) is off by default; nothing is written to Health Connect until you enable it in Settings.
What CalTrack writes
While Health Connect Sync is enabled, CalTrack writes one Nutrition record to Health Connect for each meal you log, containing:
- Calories (energy)
- Protein (grams)
- Fat (grams)
- Carbohydrates (grams)
- The meal category (breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack)
- The entry's name and its date
Write-only: CalTrack never reads your Health Connect data
CalTrack requests only the nutrition write permission. It does not request, and cannot obtain, any Health Connect read permission.
CalTrack authors the nutrition records for the meals you log and never reads any data back from Health Connect: not the records it wrote, and nothing written by any other app (weight, water, exercise, or anything else). Health Connect is a one-directional, downstream copy of your diary.
Turning it off, and deleting your data
- Turning Health Connect Sync off in Settings stops CalTrack from writing any further records. Records already written stay in place. Pausing sync never deletes your history.
- You can delete the nutrition records CalTrack wrote at any time using Health Connect's own per-app data controls. CalTrack never deletes Health Connect data in bulk on your behalf.
- Because everything CalTrack writes is derived from your on-device diary, you can rebuild it at any time with the Re-sync button in Settings, and remove it entirely by clearing CalTrack's data in Health Connect.
Open Food Facts
When you search for a food by name or scan a barcode, CalTrack sends that search text or barcode number to Open Food Facts to retrieve nutrition information. Camera frames never leave your device. Only the decoded barcode number is sent. Open Food Facts is an independent, open database with its own terms of use. No personal identifier or diary content is sent with these lookups.
Permissions
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Internet | Look up foods and barcodes on Open Food Facts when you search or scan. |
| Camera | Scan a product barcode on-device; the camera frames never leave the device. Only the decoded barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts. |
| Health Connect: write nutrition | Write the nutrition records described above while Health Connect Sync is enabled. Write only; no read permission is requested. |
Children
CalTrack is a general-purpose tool that stores data locally and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children.
